PRESS RELEASE:
Rejecting Religious Discrimination in Ogun State: A Call for Equal Representation
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) in Ogun State is deeply concerned about the recent All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship aspirants’ selection process and the glaring imbalance in religious representation in our dear state. This development once again highlights the persistent marginalization and discrimination against Muslims in Ogun State, a region with a significant Muslim population and notable Muslim intellectuals.
MURIC Ogun State issued this note of caution in a statement issued on Wednesday,16th October, 2024.
The Statement was signed by the chairman of MURIC in Ogun State Alhaji Jimoh Tajudeen Alao.
It reads:
It has come to our attention that 16 out of the 20 chairmanship aspirants are reportedly Christians, primarily members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), while only four are purportedly Muslims.
This apparent disparity raises serious questions about the fairness of the selection process and the commitment of our political leaders to inclusivity and equity.
Despite our previous appeals, Governor Dapo Abiodun has repeatedly turned a blind eye to the concerns of the Muslim community, allowing the perpetuation of a system that relegates Muslims to second-class citizens.
This systemic marginalization extends to the realm of education, as Islamic Studies teachers remain conspicuously absent from government-run primary and secondary schools across the state, while Christian Religious Knowledge (CRK) teachers are abundant.
We assert that Ogun State belongs to all its citizens, regardless of faith or creed. As such, we categorically reject all forms of religious discrimination and demand that our leaders foster an environment of fairness, respect, and equal representation for Muslims and Christians alike.
To those political figures who undermine the progress of Islam and the well-being of Muslim citizens, we issue a stern warning. Your actions will not be forgotten, and history will judge your complicity in perpetuating injustice.
When the time comes for you to seek higher office, the Muslim community will stand united in denying you the votes that hinge on our marginalization.
It is high time for us to collectively denounce these divisive and unjust practices and work together to build an Ogun State where every individual, irrespective of faith, enjoys equal rights, opportunities, and representation. We call upon our Muslim leaders to break their silence and join us in this struggle for a more inclusive and equitable future for our community.
Together, let us raise our voices in the name of justice and fairness.
